Infrastructure Inspection Training
Bridges, Culverts, Retaining Walls, Boardwalks & Public Infrastructure

Ponte Point delivers hands-on, practical training programs designed for municipal engineering, operations, and parks staff.
The focus is simple: teach teams what to look for, why it matters, and when to escalate.

Training Format
The standard program is delivered over two days:

Day 1 – Classroom: fundamentals, defect recognition, and inspection methodology
Day 2 – Field: practical inspection of real structures from the client’s asset inventory

Additional days can be added to expand field training, cover more asset types, or provide advanced sessions.

Level 1 – Fundamentals
Designed for front-line, non-technical and technical staff, including operations crews and junior engineering personnel:

-  Overview of infrastructure types and components (bridges, culverts, retaining walls, boardwalks, park structures)
-  Standardized terminology and naming conventions for consistent communication
-  Identification of routine maintenance items and early-stage deterioration
-  Recognition of public safety hazards in high-use environments
-  Basic understanding of material behaviour
-  Introduction to condition states and what they mean
-  Use of simplified inspection forms and photo documentation for consistent record keeping
-  Clear guidance on when conditions require escalation to a Professional Engineer.

Outcome
-  Improved consistency and quality of field observations
-  Better communication between field staff and engineering teams
-  Early identification of maintenance and safety issues
-  Clear understanding of when engineering review is required

Level 2 – Enhanced Assessment
Designed for technical staff, senior operators, and designated inspection leads supporting engineering-led programs:

-  Structured condition assessment approach aligned with engineering practices
-  Understanding load paths and how defects influence structural behaviour
-  Differentiating between maintenance, serviceability, and structural concerns
-  Timber probing and targeted non-destructive assessment techniques
-  Risk-informed observation and documentation to support engineering review
-  Development of clear, structured records suitable for engineering interpretation and audit
-  Understanding thresholds for referral to a Professional Engineer for further evaluation

Outcome
-  Higher-quality field data to support engineering assessments
-  Improved coordination between operations staff and engineers
-  More efficient and focused use of engineering resources
-  Strong, defensible documentation aligned with asset management and audit requirements

Testimonials

"Natalya provided Level 1 bridge inspection training for City of Chilliwack Engineering and Operations staff, which was a massive success thanks to her knowledge and passion for the subject. The two-day training was very engaging and offered practical skills to help the City become more familiar with critical assets and ultimately get the most out of our bridges. The City strongly recommends Ponte Point to neighboring local governments and asset managers who want to maximize asset lifespan and better understand their bridge." structures.

“Natalya Kucherenko delivered an excellent training session that was practical, well-structured, and directly applicable to our day-to-day work. Her engaging approach and focus on real field conditions made the material highly relevant for staff who regularly work with structures. The training provided clear, actionable knowledge that will help our team better understand, assess, and manage our bridge assets.”
